About the program
Syktyvkar Forest Institute (SFI) offers an interdisciplinary Forest Summer School that is a combination of lectures, field site visits to boreal forests accompanied by a short Russian language course and combined with a diverse cultural program both in the city and in the countryside.
During your stay in Syktyvkar you can learn about Russian forest management and use, timber logging operations, forest certification, biodiversity, nature protection, forest policy and law, doing business in Russia (legal, economical and cultural aspects), Komi history and survival Russian.
The international group of German and Russian students has lectures and presentations at Syktyvkar Forest Institute, makes site visits to local timber processing enterprises, spends several days in the “Silver taiga” Model forest, stays in Finno-Ugric ethnopark and learns about history and culture of the local Komi people.
We are located in the capital of the Komi Republic, North-West Russia in the European North. You can get to Syktyvkar from any European country by plane with one stop in Moscow or St-Petersburg. The flight to Syktyvkar from Moscow takes approximately two hours.
Curriculum
Forest summer school starts at Syktyvkar Forest Institute with lectures on:
- Russian forestry;
- Russian forest management and use;
- Doing business in Russia: economical, legal and cultural aspects;
- Timber industry in the Komi Republic;
- Sustainable forest management and use in the Komi Republic;
- Survival Russian (for beginners);
- Forest policy and law;
- Bioenergy in the Komi Republic.
You can also visit the only internationally recognized in whole Russia Model forest “Silver taiga” foundation office to learn about their activities and boreal forests of the Komi Republic (http://www.silvertaiga.ru/en/). As our republic is the forestiest region in Europe we still have got pristine untouched forests and many nature protected areas, national parks and nature reserves. We organize for you a two-day forest field trip to the Model forest (200 km southwards, in Ob’yachevo) and you can learn about the Komi forests, biodiversity, natural processes.
Our Forest Summer school includes companies site visits to JSC “Mondi Syktyvkar” – the biggest pulp and paper mill in North-West Russia (http://www.mondigroup.com/en/) and a sawmill to see typical timber processing. You also have a field trip to the leased logging areas of JSC “Mondi Syktyvkar” to get acquainted with timber harvesting, logging operations, thinnings and other forest operations.
Cultural and intercultural activities
Professional guides from Syktyvkar Ethnographical Museum will tell you about the interesting customs and history of local Komi people that belong to the Finno-Ugric group of peoples and languages. You can also learn about the history of this place, ancient myths and legends, peculiar history during the soviet period.
During the field trips, you will see small Komi settlements, communicate with the local people, enjoy beautiful landscapes, make national crafts, produce hand-made souvenirs and just enjoy yourself at the Finno-Ugric ethnopark (http://www.ethnopark-rk.ru/).
Forest School Fee
The Forest Summer school fee is 650 euro. It includes your costs for the academic and cultural programme; pick up service; visa support; bus rent; three field trips and accommodation during the field trips out of the city; meals during field-trips and some lunches at the Institute.
Accommodation
You can accommodate in the SFI dormitory (guest house) in double rooms within three-room flats with a bathroom, kitchen in the same flat. Residents are provided with bed-linen and basic utensils. If you want, you can also stay in one of the city hotels.
During the field trips, you will stay in a hotel “Finnougoria” in double-rooms.
Requirements:
- Basic forestry-related subjects knowledge;
- Good knowledge of English;
- Valid international passport;
- Copy of the passport should be sent to SFI by June 8th, 2018.

You should also fill in an application form, send a Motivation letter, copy of your valid international passport for the visa support.
